hello, friend.

You might be wondering why you haven't seen me recently. I'm not gone...just have been readjusting to my new site. The site is amazing, thanks to some fantastically amazing people. They have been willing to do this and that, and listen to my non-technological self give lengthy explanations of all that I do and do not want. The great thing, is that I still have the blog on the new site, and it's all in one place...
trulytogetherwonderfulness... I tell ya.

So, come see me over here, and as I get settled, and as wedding season is wrapping up, I'll have lots more fun to come!

Come on over...there's plenty more celebrating to do!

It's coming. And, I love seeing it happen. I'm pulling out my chili recipes and my sweaters and getting excited about the Fall once again. I even made a Autumn Love board that is making me very happy right now. I seriously want to throw a party just to be able to design this table.

The other week, I happened to stop in at Anthropology. I don't do that nearly enough.

It's always been one of my favorite stores, but I don't usually have the time to stop. However, when one of my dear friends had her birthday, and I wanted to treat her to a little something from her favorite store, it gave me more than enough reason to visit.

As soon as I walked in, I had to start taking pics. Not just because it was beautiful, or because it welcomed me in with her wonderful smells...but because I couldn't stop seeing wedding inspiration.

centerpiece material

These fun things have DIY written all over them. It doesn't have to be bought at anthropology! Wrapping yarn around cylinders and putting different candle holders inside with buttons could be all of $2 for a unique centerpiece!

polaroid picture display

I love finding creative ways to display pictures at weddings. Polaroids make such a statement, and I love the way Anthro hung theirs here. You could find a spot to hang pictures of the past, or to show off the fun from the day of the wedding. Your guests will have fun taking and viewing them for the entire time!

i may be the only one that thinks wedding all the time, but hopefully, it will give you a little inspiration! are there stores that you find yourself feeling refreshed and inspired?

Any restaurant that decorates their cute cafe to look like a warm inviting home, is gonna get my attention.

I vaguely remember when I was a little girl, going into my Grandaddy's old store, and being able to pick out candy for just a few cents. It didn't happen a lot, but when it did, it was something special.

Today, I happened to pop into a (fairly) new shop in town. The Sugar Shack has been opened for just about a year now, and is the cutest little candy store around.

Of course, the first thing that caught my eye was the old-timey cash register (that still works!) That definitely took me back to watching Willy Wonka! But, as you look around, that feeling of being a kid rushes back as you see all the endless jars of candy.

They have a whole wall dedicated to multiple Jelly Belly jellybeans, any flavor you so desire, and chocolate gems in any color you want. Plus, an entire collection of organic candy!

There is table after table of tried and true favorites as well as hard to find specialty selections. And, everything is $8.99 per pound, so you don't have to wonder how everything is priced.

However, the sweetest part of this little shop was how it felt to be there. The happy colors of candy and friendly staff was eager to have a visitor. And, don't you dare tell my kids that I went without them, because there was even a cute little kids table for children to be able to sit and color. (not to mention the mouthwatering snack selection.)

This Saturday is the Sugar Shack's first anniversary...or as I would say 1st Birthday! They're putting on a fun party with pretty hefty swag bags for the first 30 people. Balloon Artist, Magic Christopher will be there from 12-2, and face painting from 3-5 done by Allison Wood. But, no matter when you get there, you're sure in for a treat!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've decided Thursdays are going to be my "around the corner" posts. I'll be highlighting a local business or event that you don't want to miss. Make sure you check back on Thursdays for an upcoming local outing that's sure to please! And, if you are interested in being our spotlighted business, feel free to email me with information.

And, funny enough, you might not think style has a lot to do with flowers.

When you think of "your style", what immediately pops in your head? Clothes? Jewelry? Or, maybe shoes?!?

You probably weren't about to say flowers. And, strangely enough, flowers are what can really make or break the style of your wedding or event. However, many times, it's the flowers that people have the hardest time knowing how to explain what they want. (And, here's a hint...sometimes it's showing what you don't like that gives the best clues!)

I've found that the more communication you give your florist, the more they are able to understand your vision for the day. With that understanding, should come the look you're dreaming of for your wedding.

When you describe what you like (or don't like) to your florist, make sure they ask you these five things...and, if they don't make sure you tell them!

Five Questions Your Florist Should Ask...

1. Do you prefer hand tied or cascading (trailing) bouquets?

2. Do you prefer a mixture of flowers or all one type of flower

(composite is their fancy word for this)?

3. What is the style of your wedding?

(elegant, natural, whimsical, classic, modern?)

4. What are your favorite flowers, and your least favorite flowers?

5. What colors do you want to use?

If all you told them was what flowers you like, you never know what look you will really get. Those five questions will give them a starting place to know exactly what your style is.
Apparently, I'm just like Fancy Nancy. Everything sounds prettier in French. Thus, flowers become fleurs, and oh, so pretty!

Before You Go...

You might have heard the old Southern saying, "Don't arrive empty handed." Well, going to your florist is no different. Don't go empty-handed! Your florist cannot event begin to think, design, or create what you will like without having some idea of what your vision for your flowers is.

Have fun pinning away and make yourself a board or, you can go the old fashion route and clip out from magazines. Your florist will be thankful for pictures, either way. As you pin, you will begin to see a trend with colors and arrangements, that will help to show what your style is. (Don't take mine as an example of similar tastes and styles...Mine is the opposite...it's a starting board for finding out which ones are clients favorites, so that then I can begin to narrow down which ones are their style.) But, just from looking over a few pictures, you can begin to see which style and colors you like the best with flowers.

The last thing you want is to have your flowers show up at your wedding and be completely off from what you were thinking your flowers were going to look like.

So, if you're in the middle of planning, that's your homework...find pictures of what flowers you absolutely love, so that you know you're all on the same page.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-74081322814521886062012-08-07T06:00:00.000-04:002012-08-07T06:00:00.341-04:00flourish{ing}

Flowers are amazing.

You have a bare space, and then all of a sudden, you add flowers or greenery, and there's life!

But, similarly to color schemes, the trends with flowers change over time. What I picked for my bridal bouquet (13 years ago today actually!) was perfect...then.

Maybe I'm just too fickle, and vary my taste too much, but my flowers would be completely different now, than what I chose in August of 1999.

Over the last decade, {like many things in the wedding industry} the floral industry has taken quite a turn. There is a whole movement toward more organic and natural arranging, and not your grandmother's (no offense!) florist.

For years, I didn't like the term florist. It just felt stuffy, and unexciting, to say the least. But, I love flowers! It wasn't that I was unhappy with the flowers, more of how I would see them arranged.

There is a huge difference between having someone do the flowers, and someone being a floral designer.

In the next few posts, I'll be giving some tips on how to pick your favorite flowers, and how to make sure your style will truly flourish.
Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-3447435838162096092012-08-02T09:14:00.001-04:002012-08-02T09:17:06.647-04:00On Saying Yes.

I could have said no. It would have been less messy and a whole lot less time on her part.

It started with her asking for the last fourth of the watermelon that was sitting on the counter. I thought at first, how I knew she couldn't really eat all of that. But, then I thought how cute she would be putting her whole face into the huge piece of watermelon.

The next time I looked, she was not eating, but working. Creating. Dreaming.

As she scooped and mashed and juiced away, I saw delight in her heart.

She said,

"Mom, this is going to be for all the people walking by!" (to which I thought, 'all the people' meaning, the very few people walking their dogs?)

I could have spoken realism into her hopeful heart. I could have corrected her spelling.

But, then, I wouldn't have had the best watermelon juice I had ever tasted. And, even though her only customer was her very own Mom, she felt like she had just served the queen.

Sometimes, you have to say no. But not always. And the times that I choose to say yes, seem that much more important.

What are you saying yes to this week?

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-50766416909127351992012-07-27T07:38:00.001-04:002012-07-27T07:38:10.841-04:00Going, Going...Not Gone Yet!

I'm one of those people with the awful disease of thinking you have more time than you do. Like, when I'm going out of town, not only do I have to pack, but I also have to clean the house, get all the laundry done, etc. etc. Or, when I have an extra 15 minutes, I think that I'll have plenty of time to go to the grocery store really quick just to grab a couple things before picking up the kids...sometimes that works, sometimes, not so much.

We have a month left, folks. Well, I do at least. Until school begins again and my "baby" starts Kindergarten.

It always astounds me how fast the summer flies by. There are definitely things that I've wanted to do that haven't happened. And other things that I wanted to finish that are still in progress.

But, about now, I always start to think, "Ok, priority time!! What are the things I want to do most before the summer ends?"

Here's my short list...

make {and eat} blackberry cobbler

go rock hopping

fly a kite with my kids

fall asleep reading in a hammock

go hiking

watch a sunset with my hubby

What's on your summer punch list? Because my other sickness is making checklist and checking things off, I might actually print my list off. I might be a little more prone to make these things happen! Whether your list would be staying home every day, or hiking the Appalachian Trail, let's make these last few summer days ones we love.
Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-33858100636107215102012-07-25T06:00:00.000-04:002012-07-25T06:00:08.247-04:00Color, Color, Who's Got the Color?Maybe it's just because it's summer and these colors are so fun, but this is my favorite color combo right now for weddings. It's so fun and spunky, but also modern and sophisticated. I think I'm in love...

Whenever I say or hear the phrase, "What are your colors?" I totally think of Steel Magnolias, where they're all in the beauty parlor, and they ask Shelby what her wedding colors are, and she says... (come on now, say it with me if you know it)

"My colors are blush and bashful."

And Weeza says...

"Your colors are PINK and PINK!"

Oh, I love that movie. Ok, so what about you...

What were your colors? If you had to do it all over again, what colors would you choose?

I'm sure I'll change my mind in another month, but for now...I think I'll go put on my coral earrings and a turquoise dress.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-26847194919661789972012-07-23T07:54:00.001-04:002012-07-23T07:56:17.274-04:00A Very, Very Unbirthday...One of my favorite things to do is to give gifts. It's such a little way to celebrate. When we were little, my great aunt would always bring everyone "unbirthday presents" to our family's annual beach trip. We wouldn't always see her throughout the year, but she knew she would have all the nieces and nephews together at the beach. Now, I don't remember one single gift (I know, that's awful), but I do remember how fun it was to anticipate the unbirthday gifts, as well as my Aunt Ruth being so excited to pass them out to all of the eager recipients.

This past week, I was so excited when I found a great deal on some super cute Steve Madden sandals for under $10! I couldn't resist a pair for myself, but because they were such a good deal, I grabbed an extra pair. I wrapped them up and surprised my big sis with reinstating the "unbirthday" gift beach tradition.

So, needless to say, whenever I see a good gift idea, or a clearance marked little goodie, I try to stash it away for the next gift I might need. I don't have an extra $30-$50 to spend on each gift, so it's always fun to find little gifts that don't cost a ton. Then, the best part is wrapping it up and surprising your next friend, guest or hostess.

One rule of thumb I've learned is that you want your gift to be useful or enjoyable. Here are some thoughtful little gift ideas that are all under $10 and are sure to please!

homemade baked goods are always a treat. Wrap up a few in a clear or paper bag, and tie a ribbon around the top. A note attached adds a little extra cuteness.

Remember when I said I was gonna have a party? Well, last week we had some friends over for the fourth and we had a good ol' fashion founders day party. It was a blast! We had sack races, and a watermelon roll, lots of sparklers, and tons of great food. And, for dessert, we had a pie baking contest...with real non-biased judges and everything!

My daughter is to the age where pretty much any project I can do, she can do even better! I taught her how to do pinwheels, and she couldn't get enough of them. We used scrapbook paper we had on hand, and didn't worry about the patterns and colors not being the exact color of the flag. We accented the centers with cute buttons, and they were fabulous.
In my favorite potluck fashion, everyone brought a side dish and we provided the burgers and hot dogs. Then, for dessert, those who felt up to the challenge, made a pie for the pie baking contest! It was great. We had non-biased judges and everything.
I Can't Throw a Party Because I Don't Have Any Time (And 10 No-Prep Parties to Plan)Ok, folks, this is it. The fourth (and possibly most believable) myth about why you "can't throw a party." However, hopefully, I'll be able to convince you otherwise!

Sure, you can spend time making fun things to embellish your events. But those things are not a must have. You can bake until your fingers turn blue to make sure all your items have been made from scratch, but again...not necessary.

If I had to sum up the reasons to party, I'd say, "To enjoy one another's company and to celebrate life." I'm sure we could add to that list immensely, but those are the biggies. To do those things, it doesn't take much.

To wrap up the myth series, I thought I'd end with a list of how parties can happen with little to no preparation involved.

Here's 10 easy ways to add a little more partying to your life...

1. Grab a blanket and take out easy things (carrot sticks, fruit, yogurt, cheese, leftover pizza, etc.) from your fridge and meet your friends for a party at the park. Take a frisbee or a football to add a little action to your evening.

2. Host an ethnic dinner party. Decide on a type of food (i.e. Mexican) and ask people to bring their favorite dish. This could be something you host even on a monthly basis! You get the best of both worlds...literally.

3. Have a wine and cheese party. Add chocolate if you really want to make them happy.

4. One word for ya...potluck. Always the best food ever, and everyone takes their dirty dishes home with them.

5. Make the kids happy and have a banana split party. Ask friends to bring their favorite topping...you provide the bananas and ice cream. Easy and so very fun. My genius of a friend did this for her wedding reception and it was a blast!

6. Have a movie night. You could make this one family friendly or not, but either way, the prep is a cinch. Just have the popcorn ready...and maybe a little movie theater candy! Want it on the big screen? Martha has a great idea for really seeing the stars!

7. Have your friends over for a pizza party...but instead of getting it delivered, let everyone make their own! You could provide the dough, sauce, and cheese, but let everyone bring a different topping. It's fun to see what people like on their pizza, and you have your dinner and party planned!

8. Another fun one for kids...have their friends come over in bathing suits and have a water party. All you really need is a hose and a hot day (which we have plenty of right now!) You can keep it completely outside...even have it at a local park if you're worried about your house getting soaked. Because it's a water party, give them water to drink and watermelon to eat.

9. Game night is always a blast. You could start with game stations for the warm up games...Checkers, card games, or board games are classics. Then, end your evening with a large group game like Charades, Pictionary, or Catch Phrase. Outdoor games are great too. It's always fun to get a Horseshoe or Cornhole competition going.

10. Last but not least (and probably the easiest!)...wait for it...have a take out party. Let everyone bring over their favorite take out, and all mix and match family style! Don't forget to grab menus from each restaurant to make sure you can share your favorite local spots.

Remember to simply enjoy the people in your life. When it comes down to it, the party trends will change, and your guests will forget what was on the menu. What they won't forget is that you asked them to come over, and party on.
Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-69115823914689177002012-06-30T17:17:00.000-04:002012-06-30T17:17:37.537-04:00Myth 3. I Can't Throw a Party Because I Don't Have Any Money. The other day, my daughter and I were having a fun date and as I was fixing my coffee, I looked up and saw this.

I was shocked that here in plain print, I was being told that the only way I could "throw a perfect dessert party" was to buy these things and spend over one hundred dollars, and not even including the food! As you can see, I was so irritated, I had to take a picture. I wanted to hold it up and say, "NO YOU DON'T! Don't buy these things, and have an even BETTER DESSERT PARTY!!" But, thankfully for my daughter, and my reputation, I refrained.

I say all that to say, even though you can feel overwhelmed by all that's out there that you could have at your parties, there are really only a few things that are necessary to make a party awesome. And, surprisingly enough, money isn't one of them.

Of course, like anything, you can go spend hundreds, even thousands of dollars to hire a band and a caterer and all that's in between, but let's face it...who has that to throw around? Not me!

So, instead of spending tons of money to make your party amazing, why not keep it simple? Here are a few tips to remember when you're trying to save on your budget:

1. Have friends each bring a food item to share. You can designate what type of food you're hoping they'll bring, but that way, you don't blow a ton of money on providing all the food, or on hiring a caterer.

2. If you want the most bang for your buck when it comes to decor, grab some fresh flowers. They're the most beautiful thing you can put on your table, and take no time to make (and you don't get paper cuts from crafting all day). Even if you don't have the budget for a bouquet, simply cut some fresh greenery from your trees and plants in your yard. It's amazing what a difference bringing plants in can make.

3. You don't have to provide alcohol. People ask me sometimes, "Do you think it's okay to just have water or tea?" The answer is absolutely yes. You can check out my favorite way to spruce up your water here. And, people go crazy for some fancy water, let me tell ya. Just let people know to BYOB (bring their own beer or wine) when you invite them.

4. Keep the menu to a minimum. Rather than feeling like you have to do every course, just stick to the basics. You can get away with making it as simple or extravagant as you want. To keep it less expensive, just limit what you have. All you need is something to munch on, and something to drink. You don't need to have appetizers, salads, entrees, dessert, and coffee. You could just have drinks and apps. Or just dessert. Remember, this is your party. Make it what works best for your budget.

There are lots of things you can spend money on to make your event one to remember, but I'm not convinced that money is what makes that happen. I'm pretty sure that it would be well remembered simply by having it. You don't have to break the bank to have your friends over and have a good time. So, why would you?

Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-36795873209906267642012-06-25T06:00:00.000-04:002012-06-25T06:00:14.774-04:00Myth 2. "I Can't Have a Party Because I'm Not Crafty"

I absolutely love looking on blogs, in magazines and on Pinterest for inspiration. Really, I do. However sadly, sometimes it has the opposite effect on me.

The hope is that these sources would motivate and inspire us. But, many times in actuality, we end up having feelings of discouragement, frustration, even anger, just because it feels so far from our reality. And, even though I'm somewhat crafty, the downward spiral of feeling like I'm not enough still tries to trap me in it's grip.

Maybe some of these thoughts sound familiar. Thoughts like...

"You wouldn't be able to do something like that."

"Geeze, are you kidding me!? There's NO way I could make that! I shouldn't even try, because I'll just feel like a failure if it doesn't work."

Or maybe you feel like this...

"I'm not a DIY (do-it-yourself) person, so I'm not even gonna try to host a party."

I read this quote not long ago and I loved it so much I pinned it to one of my boards.

I think so much of who we are comes out of us learning to loose our fear of being wrong. If I never design a table again out of fear that it might not be the best ever, I am choosing to squelch a part of who I am. A part of how God has gifted me to be.

If I am afraid that my event design business, not might turn out to be world renown and Oprah-worthy, would that really mean that it was altogether bad?

Of course not. Let me say that again. OF COURSE NOT!!!!!

I love that as we are willing to not be the "best" often, the best comes out of us. Our best. Not Martha's. Not that blogger that you aspire to be. It's even better... it's your best.

You don't have to be crafty to throw a party. You don't even have to have DIY stuff there. Unless you want to. Unless it's something you're dying to make, and you are willing for it to be YOURS.

My mom used to say all the time, "Melissa, comparisons are odious." I used to hate that saying, and even more I hated the word "odious." I mean who says that?!? What does that even mean??? But, the longer I live, the more I've come to understand how very perfect that word is.

When we choose to believe those foul smelling comparisons, we are completely robbed of any joy to be ourselves. And being you, is really the only thing you need to do. And you're the only one who can do that.

So, go grab your own dishes (paper or not), and grab your favorite food (homemade or not) and have your besties over. They'll be so glad you asked.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-20793938460096581482012-06-21T15:54:00.001-04:002012-06-21T15:54:21.311-04:00Speaking of Parties...(My Simple Mom Podcast!)

You probably have heard of Simple Mom...she's awesome and has an amazing blog. Last year, I had such a blast meeting Tsh at a conference. We hit it off, and had a ton of fun hanging out that weekend.
We did a podcast about party planning, life, and working from home, and laughed a lot. It's totally fun, and I'd love for you to grab a cup of coffee or your laundry basket, and listen in as we chat it up!
I couldn't wait to share with you all, but I'll be back to the "Myths" on Monday!Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-55580625214109138562012-06-18T15:10:00.000-04:002012-06-18T15:10:04.350-04:00Myth 1. "I Can't Host a Party Because My House is Too Small and I Don't Have Enough Seats."

Over the years of planning parties, I've managed to learn a few things.

1. People like to stand at parties.

2. People like to be in the kitchen, crammed in with the most action going on around them.

3. People like to help.

4. People like to be outside.

Last year we had an event at our house that was a blast. Our neighborhood is awesome and loves doing lots of year round fun things. In December, we do a progressive dinner, and move to different houses to have all the different courses. My house was the final stop of the evening for desserts. (Big surprise that I chose dessert, heehee.)

We had more people squeezed into this house than we knew what to do with, but it was fabulous. But, even with all those people...everyone was standing. And, about 60% of them were in the kitchen.

I glanced into the den at one point, and there were like 2 people in the den. And then, the living room...maybe 3 people. But between all our comfy chairs and sofas offering seats for about 20, there weren't many takers. All 50+ people were either standing around the kitchen and eating nook, or out by the fire pit in the back yard.

I love how people like to be squished into the kitchen, even when it's usually not the biggest or most comfortable room. I think it's because we feel so at home in kitchens. We spend so much of our days there, that we are drawn to want to be in a place that is familiar. A place where we can help. A place that feels like home.

Another great solution for small spaces is to take the party outside. When the weather is cooperating, take your party outdoors. It opens up your level of space tremendously, and allows your house to be a little less crowded. Blankets and quilts are a quick and easy answer for seating, not to mention, your house stays a bit cleaner with keeping the fun outdoors!

I think that when we manage to get over the insecurity of feeling like our homes aren't "good enough" we'll realize how perfect they truly are and we'll begin to more freely invite our family and friends right on in...even to our messy kitchens. Chances are, they might even help with the dishes.
Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-269215065109204532012-06-14T17:08:00.000-04:002012-06-14T17:08:04.906-04:00Myths About Hosting Parties...

One thing I like about hosting parties, is that it always motivates me to get my house somewhat straight. The key word there is somewhat. But, one thing that makes me sad is when I hear people say things like...

"I can't host parties because my house is just too messy."

or...

"We'd love to have people over more, we just don't have enough places for people to sit."

There are these party myths that I think we've begun believing a little too much.

I think sometimes, we believe that if we don't have a 3,500 square foot house with several living areas, and lots of seats that we can't "host" well. I'm here to tell you otherwise.

Last week, one of my friends had her son's birthday party, and I overheard one of the 5 year old guests say, "This was the best party I've ever been to." You wanna know what they did? Nothing special. They just played. Played with legos, rode scooters, ran around with water guns soaking each other, and ate hot dogs and cake. That's it. There was no magician with special tricks or a ginormous bouncy house with slides. They just played.

If we translate this little boy's lesson to what I know about people, I can easily see that the key to a great party isn't in the most expensive location, or the biggest house, or the nicest food, or the cutest favors. The key is simply feeling welcomed and glad that you're there.

The next couple weeks I'm going to write a few posts on party myths and how to overcome them. And then, I'm gonna have a party...I hope you do the same.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-77866083330240881732012-06-04T09:01:00.001-04:002012-06-04T09:01:19.452-04:00Renew{ing}I finally did it. I renewed my RealSimple subscription. And, what's more?! All the old magazines that had taken up a whole shelf in my closet are now gone. I love this purging thing.

Part of what I love about the summer is actually taking the time to enjoy that it's summertime. I love not having to rush to be somewhere every day. I love knowing that we can go to the park at 8pm if we want and not pay the consequences the next day for missing "bedtime". But, something that I struggle to do even in the summer, is to simply sit and enjoy being still. There's some lie that whispers that sitting still is being lazy or unproductive, but I'm not buying it this time.

It usually takes me going on vacation to actually sit and read a magazine. Which is ridiculous. I mean, I'm not talking hours here, but just a few minutes to sit down and read a good editorial, or the latest styles that have hit the scene. So, I had one of those great offers at %70 off the regular price, and I was suckered in to saying yes. Except, I don't feel like a sucker at all. I can't wait to get my first one in my mailbox, and flip those real (not just virtual) pages in my hands. I love a new magazine.

When I said yes to getting the magazine, I knew I was saying yes to renewing my soul, not just to renewing a subscription. It sounds funny to say, but it's those little things that help me stop, take a breath and simply enjoy life right where I am, rather than just missing all that's whizzing by me.

What is going to help you enjoy your summer? What will it take to get you to rest for just a few minutes every day? Maybe it's reading a book. Maybe it's baking a pie. Maybe it's bird watching.

Whatever it is, make sure you do it. It will be worth more than gold for your soul.Melissahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01284452629366968350noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5658653109435414239.post-11151838846680760922012-06-01T17:45:00.000-04:002012-06-01T17:45:13.547-04:00The Process of Purging

So, my summer goal is to purge. Seriously, y'all. I need stuff out and gone and good riddance, too.

It's really easy to say you need to purge. It's another thing to actually let go of the things that fill your home. Even when it's just "junk".

Last week when I started clearing some things out of the house, I started making sure the kids were okay with me passing on some of their older toys and games. My throat literally caught in my chest when they said they were done with Candyland.

"What?! Are you serious?" I replied with ease and calm of course.

Today, I took a few bags over to Salvation Army. I asked as I went to the donation door if they accepted games and toys, and (almost) wanted them to say no, so that we could hang onto them a little longer. Just in case they'd still like to play sometimes.

It does feel great to clear away and de-clutter, but going through things also reminds me that we are coming into a new phase. We're finished with PreSchool, and I've become one of those moms who can't go to MOPS anymore. I'm in the realm of the "school aged" family, and it's pretty wild. Though, it's wonderful, there's a tinge of wondering where in the world the time has gone, and how it really does fly by.

The other day, after going on about fresh local veggies and produce, I mentioned that I was going to try out a very simple shortcake recipe. Let me tell you, it was so easy. And, it was devoured within minutes...maybe seconds. The best thing about it, was that it took me about 10 minutes total to get it in the oven, and about 10 min. to bake. So, even though I hadn't planned on having Strawberry Shortcake until I was posting about it right before dinner, it still happened, and was a very delicious ending to our dinner.

"When we change a person's relationship to their food,

For a long time, I've wanted home grown vegetables on my table. Not just from the store in a bag that says, "Farm Fresh". The real kind that come straight from your own garden. We love going to the local Farmer's Market, and to pick our own strawberries, but there's always been a part of me that longs for the farm life on a daily basis.

While my desire is completely sincere, my available time to plant, weed, and tend to a garden is pretty much non-existent. Maybe some day it'll be a reality, but right now, it's a faint notion of a grand idea. A while back, I was reading in Organized Simplicity and I loved this quote...

"Growing a vegetable garden can be a cheap way to fill our bodies with good things, but who has the time to weed and hoe and water and fertilize when there's dry cleaning to pick up? Simplifying your life is meant to make things better, not worse. It's about choices - about saying no to the things in your life that aren't the best so that you are free and available to say yes to those things you truly want." (Tsh Oxenreider)

I can't tell you how freeing those words were. I felt the freedom to say, "Ok, I don't have to have a garden to live simply!" One day, I might be able to, but for now, a huge garden just isn't a reality. For some reason I'd always struggled with this picture of "One day, when my life is simplified and wholistic {and basically perfect in every way}, I'll have a garden and grow my own food." Now, yes, in a perfect world that would be wonderful. But, with a full time business, and my sweet family needing my time and energy, the gardening goes out the window.

However, eating home grown food doesn't have to.

Some friends of ours that go to our church have a family owned and operated farm, and this year, we have begun being a part of their CSA, or community supported agriculture . Each week, it has been so neat to have their produce that they have grown on our table. We are supporting their business, and their family, as well as having fresh, locally grown food each week. It fulfills both needs beautifully, without feeling the frustrating shame of not getting to a garden, one more year.

It's such a small way to feel connected to our community and our local farms, but it feels right. It might be partly because of what my husband has been studying and supporting for the last several years, but I've loved knowing where my food is coming from, and feeling like there's a point to why I'm not the one growing it, though it's still straight from the ground.

I think the point of what I've been feeling is to simply be connected to one another, and to what is going on around you. It sounds big and lofty, but I've found more and more how it really is quite simple. I've been wanting to write a post for a while about it, and haven't known how to put it all together. But, it seems like the more that we are involved in our own communities, the more we are compelled to play a part of something bigger. Something more real, and forgive the pun, but organic. I love seeing how we each have a part to play, and a story to share.

This is a great time to see what farms you have in your own area. Check out your local farmers market, or go online to Pick Your Own and see where you can pick your food straight from a local farm. Sometimes you might have a little drive out in the country, but it's well worth the distance.

Saturday we went to our favorite spot for fresh picked strawberries (Rudd Farm) and picked our first batch of berries for the year. Tonight I'll be making a super easy Strawberry Shortcake for dessert...I'll be sure to share the recipe if I like the way it turns out!
Well...where have I been lately? All I can say is that it truly is wedding season. A great one, but yes, definitely in full swing around here!

One of my cute as pie couples just got hitched a few weeks ago, and they were such a blast to work with. You might remember them from way back last fall, when we were searching for venues. After months and months of planning, their day came off splendidly.

People always ask me if I'm so relieved when the big day is finally over, and the answer is not always a rushing, "YES!" The reason? I love being able to develop a relationship with my clients, and through doing so, I'm able to find out exactly what they need to make sure their day comes off perfectly.

The flip side of it, is that often times, through the months of planning, we work so closely that we become friends. Good friends. I know their families on a first name basis, and they know all about mine. We know how each other likes our coffee (or tea), and usually greet each other with hugs. By the time the "I do" comes around, we've got each other on speed dial and are chatting almost every day. So, while the wedding day is a huge success to all who are involved, there is also a tinge of sadness that comes with sending my brides and grooms off into happily ever after. However, it doesn't stay for long...there's always too much celebrating!

From the centerpieces we designed that incorporated Jo's grandmother's china, to the bright colors they chose to reflect their vivid personalities, this wedding could not have been more perfect for this sweet bride and groom. I love this slideshow, because in every shot, you can see the love and enjoyment Jo and Rob have for one another. Totally in love...completely happy...and absolutely enjoying every moment of their day.

I couldn't have been more thrilled with how it turned out. Special thanks to Micciche Photography for this peek into their amazing day, as well as Farm & Filigree (florist), Savory Street (caterer), Carolina Theater (venue), Wally West Music Resource (DJ) and, last but definitely not least my awesome team here at Relish for making their wedding day a beautiful one!
